Rhodiola Rosea for Stress

By alena jones at 2010-12-30 04:59:50
Rhodiola rosea is a popular herbal remedy for stress relief, low energy levels and decreased mental capacity. More and more people are turning to herbal solutions for their health problems because they believe herbals are safer than prescription drugs. Earlier rhodiola was thought of as an aphrodisiac that enhances sexual powers. Even increase in the production of sex hormones was reported in different studies carried our on this root. When used in combination with other power-foods like amalaki and acai, the root acts as an amazing energy booster and restore the nutritional balance of the body.

Rhodiola rosea is a flowering herb in one of the plant family. Its genus is Rhodiola and there are other 200 different species within its genus. Rhodiola rosea is also known in different names such as Golden root, Rose wort, Arctic root, and Roseroot. Scientists in Soviet Russia labeled rhodiola rosea as an adaptogen after it exhibited a capacity to increase a person's ability to resist the biological stress incurred during physical and mental challenges. An adaptogen, as the word implies, boosts an individual's ability to adapt to strenuous circumstance, both physical and mental.

Rhodiola rosea root is also known as Golden Root and Roseroot, although it is not a rose, nor even a member of the rose family. Rhodiola rosea is actually a member of the botanical family that includes the jade plant and the popular succulent known as "hen and chicks." Rhodiola Rosea enhances learning and memory as well as mental speed and accuracy. Researchers tested the ability of 60 foreign students to learn Russian. Twenty began taking 660 mg a day, 20 took a placebo and 20 took nothing. Those given 660mg of Rodaxin (Rhodiola Rosea and Vitamin C formula) showed a 60.7% increase in their language learning ability and reported less fatigue then those not given the supplement.

By utilizing a solvent like water or ethanol, manufacturers create concentrated part of the plant they then market as an extract. In this case, the rhodiola plant is concentrated into rhodiola rosea extract. In the dietary supplement world, rhodiola rosea extract is categorized as a nootropic or a "smart drug". This plant has a positive effect on the central nervous system (CNS) as studies have shown that it can increase the bioelectrical activity in the brain. It also stimulates neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin.

Depression as well seems to respond very positively to Rhodiola and many people have seen good results from taking the herb to lessen the symptoms of depression. Related issues of unstable emotions and sleeplessness seemed to respond to this natural health alternative. Rhodiola Rosea, as a stress-retarding adaptogen, has the potential to enhance brain function and mood. Stress interferes with memory functions and, over time, causes deterioration in memory systems. In addition to enhancing cognitive functions, learning and memory, Rhodiola Rosea may exert positive effects on memory and cognition by improving resistance to physical and emotional stress.

Rhodiola rosea is a wonderful hormonal regulator; it helps us to cope with life changes so much better. Rhodiola is an herbal supplement, taken three times daily. So effective is this hormone stabilizer that menopausal women go from teeth-gnashing grouches to laid-back socializers within a few weeks of starting it. Tablets or capsules are standardized and a normal dose is one or two a day, one in the morning, and then one more in the early afternoon. Again be careful about taking too close to bedtime. For some people this will have no effect on their sleep, in fact it can be a great sedative and increase restful sleep.

There are anti anxiety depression medications that are often prescribed to patients but the Rhodiola Rosea herb can work just as well. This herb calms and relaxes the mind and greatly improves neurological disorders of all sorts.
