Health Benefits of Rosemary Herb

By alena jones at 2010-12-30 04:47:01
The name Rosemarius comes from Rose meaning 'dew' and 'marinus' which means 'from the sea'. Rosemary as a whole means 'dew from the sea'. The wild rosemary plant is considered native to Mediterranean region where it grows along the sea coast. Rosemary is widely known for its use in food, flavor and fragrance. Rosemary planting was long known and people grew rosemary for its antioxidant and preservative properties. Rosemary is a woody evergreen perennial, with beautiful needle-like shiny green leaves. It is native to a Mediterranean climate, and so does best with mild temperatures. Rosemary can tolerate slight drought. It can even tolerate a seaside location. It can not, however, tolerate a cold climate. Fortunately, rosemary can be grown in pots, and so those growing rosemary in areas which get killing frosts should be prepared to winter their plant indoors in a pt.

Modern herbalists do not generally recommend rosemary for memory problems like ancient people did, there might still be a role for it in cognitive problems. As a tea or shampoo, rosemary contains certain compounds that may help inhibit Alzheimer's . Drink lots of rosemary tea & use shampoos containing its essence. Rosemary is slow to germinate and grow from seed so it is best to buy plants or propagate rosemary from stem cuttings. If you are growing this herb indoors, rosemary thrives when moved outdoors for the summer. Leave rosemary in pots in the garden as it seems to be able to adjust to moving back in-doors more successfully. Move back indoors before the first frost, check for insects, and if there is an infestation, spray with a soap and water spray.

For culinary purposes, Rosemary is often paired up with lamb as its bittersweet, nutty flavor is excellent in counterbalancing the richness and fattiness from the meat. Rosemary is also used as an aromatic herb and its extract can be found in tinctures, bath oil, hair rinse, and insect repellent. One of the benefits of the rosemary shampoo is to be found in the fact that this is one shampoo that has great efficacy at cleansing of the hair. Of course, all shampoos promise this help, but we all know that it is not every shampoo that promises this type of help that goes on to deliver on it.

Rosemary grows best in the temperate climate of the Mediterranean, but it does so in the highly acidic, sandy soil of the region. When planting rosemary, ignore the specialty packages of potting soil and fertilizers. If you happen to live in a region with very poor, sandy soil, you're definitely in luck. Stick the plant directly into that lousy sand, in a sunny location, water it generously, and then leave it alone. The less attention and care it gets, the better it will do. Most people know that rosemary is the right herb for cooking lamb, and it certainly makes the best roast lamb you've ever tasted. Simply cut deep slits in the roast and insert rosemary leaves with slivers of garlic before cooking for a sweet, tender roast.

Rosemary has fragrant, sticky, pine needle-like leaves with deep green on top and white underneath. Mature rosemary branches are brown and have a thin papery covering that looks like peeling bark. Rosemary plants are easy to grow in containers and can also be used for bonsai. Rosemary can be shaped into small cone-shaped trees for Christmas, or grown inside of mesh cages and shaped into fantastic topiary creations.

Rosemary can be used both internally and externally to increase blood flow. It has both antispasmodic and diuretic properties to increase urine production and can stimulate menstrual blood flow. Rosemary leaf tea was traditionally used as a medicine for stimulating the appetite, as well as for treating gastric-juice deficiency and to aid digestion. Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, is a hardy evergreen subshrub. Growing rosemary has been a past time for ages. Well-known for its aromatic leaves, which are used for seasoning food. In the past, rosemary oil was used as medicine. The foliage is dark and shiny on the leaf face and white and woolly underneath.
