Salmonella Bacteria-A Threat to Life

By alena jones at 2010-12-29 04:22:20
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that lives in a high-protein environment. It is usually found in poultry, eggs, meat, and unprocessed milk. They can also be carried by birds, turtles, and other reptiles. It thrives in a warm, high-moisture environment, and can multiply in numbers at an alarming rate. Salmonella is commonly known as a food-born infection as it is commonly found in contaminated food items. If a person has ingested too much of the bacteria that the body cannot destroy, salmonella poisoning symptoms soon occur.

Most Common Symptoms of salmonellosis are:Headache, Muscle pains, Weakness, Anorexia, Abdominal cramps, Cough Sore throat,Dizziness Chills,Diaphoresis (excessive sweating)

Salmonellosis can be very debilitating and often times cause a person to miss school or work. Salmonella symptoms can be so severe it would result to an urgent need to rush to the hospital for appropriate medical treatment. Salmonella itself is not fatal. People more often than not die of salmonella infection because of dehydration brought about by dehydration because of massive fluid loss from diarrhea and vomiting.

Eggs become infected with salmonella in more than one way. The most common way for an egg to become infected is when it comes in contact with fecal matter from a contaminated hen. Infected hens can also contaminate the inside of an egg before the hard shell is formed. However, not every egg from an infected hen contains salmonella. This bacterium is present in around 1 out of every 10,000 eggs.

One of the causes of salmonella is raw meat, especially poultry. Salmonella contamination can occur when the butchered animal comes in contact with contaminated feces. Seafood that is harvested in muddy, dirty waters can also harbor salmonella. Salmonella typhimurium will multiply by living inside immune cells. Since they are now recognized as part of the immune system, they can penetrate the intestinal wall and travel to the blood stream, causing a condition called bacteremia. The causative agent of salmonella infections actually breeds ideally in a room temperature. If they are in a food, that would make them stronger and last longer. These microorganisms thrive even when they are canned. The worse part is, they are silently in the food.

Everyone can suffer Salmonella enteriditis infection. Young children, babies, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals have a higher risk of having severe manifestations of the infection because of a weak immune system. This means that even if they have ingested a small amount of bacteria, they will suffer more compared to adults with stronger immune system. Salmonella is an intestinal disease spread by bacteria. After the food, or in this case the vitamin, is eaten or taken it passes into the intestines and binds to the intestinal walls. Through some special proteins it creates, it can penetrate the bloodstream.

Breastfeeding protects against most infectious diseases and thus breastfed babies are much less likely to get salmonella. Breastfeeding is so much easier than bottle feeding - and much less work. Think how much more hygienic it is than all those dirty bottles left behind. Treatment of salmonella depends on various conditions. If the symptoms are not that severe and resolves in less than 24 hours, no treatment is needed. Adequate fluid replacement and bed rest is all you need to cope with the condition. For severe conditions, antibiotic treatment is often recommended.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (also known as S. Typhimurium)This strain was the most common cause of food poisoning until about 1990. It is not usually fatal except in people with compromised immune systems due to other disease conditions, the elderly, and the very young. The illness is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, and could last up to 7 days.
