Health Benefits of Honey!

By alena jones at 2010-12-24 05:10:40
The term "adulterated honey" implies that the honey has been added glucose, dextrose, molasses, corn syrup, sugar syrup, invert sugar, flour, starch, or any other similar product, other than the floral nectar gathered, processed, and stored in the comb by honey bees. Most good athletes swear by the use of honey and water to stimulate and boost their sporting performances. They will do their utmost to avoid drinking chemical sports drinks which will boost performance for a little while although nowhere near the period that honey will. This is because honey will release slowly and effectively for a long period of time its energy boosting compounds.

Honey is a sweet product formed by the laborious honey bees from the nectar of flowers. A number of species of honey bees participate in the formation of honey which is later on collected by the beekeepers and finally consumed by humans. The nectar collected from flowers is converted into honey by honey bees with the help of a unique process known as regurgitation and is then stored in the honey combs inside the bee hive. Comb honey is raw pure honey sections taken straight from the hive - honey bees' wax comb. It is the most unprocessed form in which honey comes -- the bees fill the hexagon shaped wax cells of the comb with honey and cap it with beeswax. You can eat comb honey just like a chewy candy.

Honey contains an enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide which is believed to be the main reason for the antimicrobial activity of honey. Types of honey differ greatly in their antimicrobial potency, varying as much as a hundred fold. The research has shown that honey not only stops the growth of the dental plaque bacteria, it reduces the amount of acid produced, which stops the bacteria from producing dextran. Honey is very hygroscopic, which means that it easily absorbs moisture from the air. Thus, in areas with a very high humidity it can be difficult to produce good quality honey of sufficiently low water content, which can be measured using a gadget called refractometer. Raw honey's moisture content can be as low as 14%, and is usually deemed as more valuable and hence is relatively more costly.

Honey is a carbohydrate. This means it is a kind of food that gives us energy to walk, run, think and play. Honey contains vitamins. Vitamins help to keep us healthy. Honey is very good for us, so it is used in lots of things we buy in the shops. People use honey in breakfast cereal, cakes, biscuits, barbeque meats, and even shampoos and cough medicines.

Honey is well-suited for use in a great variety of skin products. It cleanses and moisturizes, leaving skin clean, soft and supple. Honey is used in facial masks, skin lotions and face cleansers with other natural ingredients. These homemade beauty aids generally cost much less than the store-bought variety, are all natural and tend to actually work better than what you might find on the shelves of your local department store.

It is nutritious and non-nutritive substances that can delay or inhibit oxidation, or neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals. The body suffers the effects of oxidative stress, responsible for the increase in cardiovascular disease and cancer, among other ills. Research shows that honey contains numerous phenolic and non-phenolic antioxidants, whose quantity and characteristics are heavily dependent on the source from which it originates floral honey.

Amongst the many health benefits of honey, what is most impressive to me - it can be a powerful immune system booster. Honey's antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties can help improve digestive system and help you stay healthy and fight disease. Start every brand new day with this cleansing tonic if you want to see this health benefit of honey: before breakfast, mix a spoonful of honey and juice from half a lemon into a cup of hot water and drink it.
