Peptic Ulcer Disease

By alena jones at 2010-12-09 05:43:43
Peptic ulcers - also referred to as peptic ulcer disease - is a relatively common condition affecting approximately ten percent of all individuals within the United States. While these diseases were once the to primarily be caused by the consumption of spicy food or stress, researchers and medical experts have now determined that the most common cause of peptic ulcers is a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori.

Peptic ulcer located in the stomach is called gastric ulcer; peptic ulcer located at the level of the duodenum is called duodenal ulcer and peptic ulcer developed at the level of the esophagus is called esophageal ulcer.

Peptic ulcer is very common, millions of Americans being diagnosed with different forms of the disorder each year. The advance of modern medicine has allowed scientists to find out more valuable information about these disorders, enabling them to develop new medical treatments. Although in the past peptic ulcer was known to affect mostly male persons, more and more women suffer from forms of peptic ulcer nowadays. Statistics indicate that the predominance of smoking among women has determined an increase of peptic ulcer incidence with the female gender.

While these symptoms will sometimes heal without any treatment, they have the capability of causing serious complications and an individual who suspects they may have ulcers should always obtain a medical evaluation for a proper diagnosis.

The antacid tablet is by far the most common thing that people will go for when they feel the symptoms of a peptic ulcer. It is true, they do help reduce the inflammation that causes a lot of the discomfort, but they will not touch the ulcer itself.

Peptic ulcer disease will only get worse with the over reliance of antacids. The antacid only deals with the symptoms of a peptic ulcer, and not the ulcer itself.

Probably the best course of action to take would be to have a doctor prescribe an antibiotic or other such prescription drug that could help eliminate the peptic ulcer disease. This offers a more permanent solution that simply using over the counter (OTC) antacids exclusively.

Lifestyle changes are always recommended to help reduce the chances of peptic ulcer disease from re-occurring. Stopping smoking, eliminating fatty foods or fried foods and cutting down on caffeine intake are all highly advised. These three things are all massive contributors to getting peptic ulcer disease.

Causes of peptic ulcers:

The two most common causes of peptic ulcers are:

Use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's)
Infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria

Peptic ulcer is caused when H. pylori and NSAID's break down the stomach or intestine's protective mucus layer which prevents digestive juices from damaging the organs.

Symptoms of peptic ulcer:

The most common symptoms of peptic ulcer are a burning pain between the navel and the breastbone. Some people also have back pain. The pain can last for a few hours and again come back to last for weeks. Some sufferers of peptic ulcer may experience loss of appetite and weight loss, vomiting, bloating or nausea. Black stools may be another symptom and these symptoms vary from one person to another.

Diagnosis of peptic ulcers:

Some simple tests pertaining to the use of blood, breath or stool will show signs of peptic ulcer if it exists. Doctors may also look for signs of H. pylori infection. An endoscopy test may also be performed by a gastroenterologist. Small areas of tissue may also be removed for ruling out stomach cancer.

How are they treated?

Most people will be prescribed medicines that reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. You may have to take antibiotics if you have an H. pylori infection. Quitting smoking and alcohol can better your chances of recovery from peptic ulcer. Use of medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen for a long term may lead to peptic ulcer.
